Julii Sharp - Burning Line
Line of sight
Folk. But not only.
Beautiful, calm, acoustic, well sung songs, with a beautiful voice, in the pure tradition of English-speaking folk-song.
A stripped-down record ideal for winter ("Neige").
Except that. A few inflows of electric guitars vibrate in the sky, preventing any risk of monotony and that's fortunate. Thus, probably by contrast, the tracks that use them the most ("Chrysalis", "Pirate in the Room") are immediately the most remarkable.
The voice walks its breath, from song to song, above the guitar arpeggios, with lightness ("Atmosphere").
Quite quickly, this voice and this way of singing made me think of Naya Mö, another discovery of 2025. I had even imagined doing an exceptional "comparative review" of the 2 singers, but I quickly abandoned this idea. Naya from Bordeaux does not yet have enough material – album expected in 2026 – so I preferred to focus on Julii from Toulouse.
Well, not really from Toulouse… For she was Born in Reunion Island, and of an English father. This probably explains her taste for this music, her connection with musicians from across the Channel, her impeccable accent and her well-written lyrics.
The lyrics flow like this, imbued with poetry and nostalgia using images, such as wind and snow. Evoking human relationships, love, friendship ("Loratzerat").
With each listening, the guitars and melodies pervade us more and more. Nourished by influences in various genres, and supported by musicians from rock, punk or jazz, she will certainly give the full measure of her eclecticism in concert. Because it's good and folk. But not only.

No intro! We enter directly into Burning Line (both the album and the eponymous track) with its first words.
The tone is set: the songs will be short. Only a few instrumental bridges will prevent them from being too short.
A good cover of Kieran Thorpe (a British folk boy living in Auvergne, with whom she sometimes shares the stage), "Balconies" lingers on its 4:57. Lingers a little too much perhaps… -
